Read: Jeremiah 17:5-8
Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord and whose trust is the Lord. For he will be like a tree planted by the water, that extends its roots by a stream and will not fear when the heat comes; but its leaves will be green, and it will not be anxious in a year of drought nor cease to yield fruit.
I often hike in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. When I do, from time to time I come across an enormous tree, a giant pine or sometimes even a giant Redwood tree. Redwood trees are huge, often measuring well over 36” in diameter. Many of them are over 150 years old and some 200 to 300 years old.
The fascinating thing about each of these trees is that they all began as tiny seedlings, small vulnerable little seedlings that have grown into huge gigantic trees today that tower over the forest below. We are all just like them when we meet our Savior and yield our lives to Jesus. We are tiny seedlings in need of care, water, good soil and time, if we are to grow into the towering world changers Jesus intends to make us.
That means we need to be planted well, in the good soil of His Word, studying and praying through His Word on a regular basis. We need water, living water that flows from His Spirit to bring us life. It is His living water that imparts in us the life He desires to nurture so we can in turn pour out life on others. We can never give away what we do not have and we cannot receive His life without being planted into His nature. Oh, and time, yes time, lots of time. It takes a long time to grow a giant tree from a tiny seedling. He is a master at shaping and maturing those who push their roots down deep into Him.
There will be storms whose winds will threaten your very existence. They are meant to cause your roots to grow deeper, not to destroy the work He has begun, but to refine it. And yes there will be times of drought. Times when you are thinking you cannot go on another day. Times when you long for His living water and you question the whole journey. Don’t give up! For a tree planted into His Word rests on His promises when it cannot see a drop of rain. A tree planted deep in Him whose roots extend into His heart will flourish even in the drought. He will take your hard times, your dry times, and He will cause your leaves to be green. He will do such a deep and life-giving work in you others will seek the shade and refuge of His presence in your life in their times of need. Yes, there will be difficult times of growth but there is no need to fear because His love for you is beyond measure. His desire for you to find your safety and shelter from your storms in Him will never end. No anxious fears here, for you my friend are becoming a giant in the forest of life, yielding the fruit of faith, hope and love in good times and bad.
Father, thank you for reminding me that you will complete the good work you have begun in me. I do hunger to grow deep in you. To see my roots push into your presence, Holy Spirit, and to see your living water transform me.
