Read: Zechariah 12:10
“I will pour upon the house of David the Spirit of grace and of supplication.”
Reflect: Sometimes we wonder why prayer can be so tough. Why it is so hard to concentrate when we pray. Why it is so difficult to pray thoughtfully and more than anything why we don’t pray with power. The answer is found in the person of the Holy Spirit. Many of us fear Him and so we live and pray powerlessly. He is the Spirit of Jesus. You need not fear Him. You need Him to live and to live with power, to pray and to pray with power.
The Holy Spirit’s place in prayer cannot be overstated. He is called the Spirit of grace and supplication. The root of this Hebrew word in Zechariah 12:10 is “To grant a favor.” The Holy Spirit has many roles in a believer’s life but few more important than His empowering place in prayer, His releasing of favor. The New Testament talks over and over about the Holy Spirit and prayer. He is mentioned in multiple contexts regarding prayer;
“In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” – Romans 8:26-27
“With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit” – Ephesians 6:18
“Praying in the Holy Spirit.” – Jude 20
As hard as prayer is we need all the help we can get. Romans 8:26-27 tells us the Holy Spirit prays for us. Ephesians 6:18 tells us to pray in the Spirit, in His power not your own. Jude 20 says the same thing, don’t go it alone or you will never enjoy praying and you will never find your prayers powerful.
I don’t think it is overstating the crucial place the Holy Spirit has in prayer when I say, “You can gauge how deeply you are walking with the Holy Spirit by how deep your prayer life is.”
He is the one who leads us to the Father’s presence. He is the one who shapes our hearts and our prayers. We need Him every day to empower us when we pray. Today ask Him to engage with you as you pray, listen for His voice and follow His lead. As you read His Word ask Him to point out promises that are there for you and then pray those back to the Father with the confidence only the Holy Spirit can give you.
Holy Spirit, please come to me and energize my prayer time with your presence. I need you to touch me and empower me, to lead me as I pray and read your Word. Thank you for caring so deeply for me.
