Day 13

Day 13

Read: John 15:4
Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me.

Reflect: All effective prayer must be born out of relationship, relationship with our Father, empowered by His Spirit. When this takes place, He imparts His authority into us and our prayers become His possibility. That cannot take place without us being found in Him. Many of us wander in and out of our relationship with Jesus, and as we wander away our prayers also wander, and weaken. In order to be effectively praying I must be found in relationship with Jesus. In John 15, Jesus was teaching His followers how vital it would be for them to remain close to Him and for them to flourish they would have to “abide” in Him.

John 15:4-11

Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.  As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.

10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in His love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

When Jesus said to remain, or abide and He used the word “Meno”. It means to stay in, don’t wander, remain with Him. He used this word 9 times in these verses. Clearly it is important for us to be with Him if we are to pray effectively. Lives that make a difference, that bring breakthrough are lives that count and matter. They are lives that make time for prayer, intentional time in prayer believing He can do what we can never do.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, I find abiding and remaining so difficult sometimes. My heart really is prone to wander. Teach me and empower me to stay in, to love Jesus with a whole heart and to be effective and intentional in my prayer life.
